Together with Dumb and Dumber, it is by far the best film of the Farrelly brothers and one of my favorite comedies from the 90s. The film is not a vehicle for one comedian, for example it is not a Ben Stiller show. In fact, Ben Stiller may be the main character, but he is mainly the silent informant here, someone who doesn't have to act funny, but is funny because of the situations in which he ends up. For example, the interrogation at the police station with him is one of the most hilarious scenes in this film. Stiller is joined by a slew of great colorful characters, including Gladjanus Matt Dillon, Britain's Lee Evans, the ever-entertaining Chris Elliot and of course Lin Shaye, a regular actress who regularly appears in memorable roles in Farrelly comedies. Cameron Diaz is the least funny of the bunch, but she doesn't have to be; she must above all be beautiful and sympathetic. And that works, the way she is portrayed here you understand that all those men like her.

What stands out about There's Something About Mary is the mix of - for the Farrelly brothers - intelligent humor and their typical vulgar humor about sperm, shit and farts. The latter is in the film - and sometimes with a very successful joke - but fortunately it is not very present. Every now and then a bit of a bit too bland slapstick pops up, especially a scene with Ben Stiller and the dog. Such a scene is not so much painfully unpleasant, but it just doesn't fit the film. A lot more fun are the chats between the characters, who all have something to hide and storylines that gradually come together more and more. There's Something About Mary is a nice romantic comedy with a nice flow and a movie that makes you happy. Every time I see the film, I find myself with a grin at the end moving along and singing with The Foundations' Build Me Up Buttercup. 'Why do you build me up….'

4 stars.

A film that I considered one of the better in the genre 20 years ago, despite the fact that comedy usually doesn't mean much to me. But how is that 2020? With fear I put off reviewing this film, because this couldn't be much more good...

But nothing is less true. The film still convinces as a fun comedy with a number of hilarious scenes and especially a number of actors in fun roles. A not particularly innovative but recognizable story about Ted who still carries the burden around the failure Mary takes its start. A story with the necessary obstacles, but also competitors in which Stiller plays a more than fine role as the sympathetic idiot and not that exaggerated nonsense from other films. Although I've never liked Diaz much, this time again not with the sheepish smile and stupid whinny, the film has to rely mainly on the various colorful and warring factions like Healey and Tucker, where the small role of Tambor may be. as Sully. Dillon is especially great as an uber-wrong private detective who tries to impress in a very wrong way, and then there is the excellent soundtrack with songs by Joe Jackson, The Foundations, The Push Stars, Ivy, Shirley Bassey/Propellerheads and the Dandy Warhols.

There is something about Mary is still a captivating comedy, where especially in the credits accompanied by the song Build me up buttercup, you can see how much fun they had while making the film. A pleasure that can be felt throughout the film. Final verdict, still a fun movie.

Wrong, wrong, bare breasts in the picture, young or old and wrinkled. Foreskin clamped in a zipper, aaiuuoe oei what a mistake. Dog drugged and set on fire, terribly wrong, animal torture. 2 men spoon spoon on cell bench, bah bluee a bit dirty. 1 man in love with hives and a face with exploding pustules, how horribly filthy. 1 man in love looking in the wehkamp guide, women's underwear page, masturbates as if his life depended on it, shockingly wrong. Mary with, ahem masculine, hair cream of (sorry censorship) nauseating foul. The only hero in the film was Warren, Mary's brother. Pull him by the ears when you meet him, he likes that. So in short, a very bad film. But oh oh what fun that movie was. 5 points
