"Make it special"

Steve Barker (Johnny Knoxville) lowers himself to an all-time low to make money: he pretends to be mentally retarded to compete in the Special Olympics. However, he is easily surpassed by his fellow Olympians, who are not only better athletes, but have a better understanding of how the world works. Steve is soon discovered by his fellow athletes as a con man, but because everyone wants to see cocky champion Jimmy beaten, they try to help the cheater to victory. Together they train Steve to be a better athlete and above all a better person.

Johnny Knoxville does the impossible: he's even less annoying than the supporting cast around him. Well, the man is cut out for this kind of rustic underpants fun with a sensitive touch. It's not half as annoying as it could have been, but in the end it's just not funny enough to keep you entertained.

The idea is nice and the disabled also do it ok. Knoxville is just a mockery, he really should stick to JackAss. There is hardly any humor there, it is more a film to promote disabled fellow human beings and to show that everyone accepts each other as they are. I wish it was true ! No, not really for me. Fortunately, the tasty Heigl joined in, to keep it tolerable.

Mediocre.

Had expected a very flat and sharp film with Knoxville and a number of mentally handicapped people, it was absolutely not. Knoxville is remarkably corny, the plot of this one can be drawn completely after fifteen minutes. Including sweet twists.

A funny scene here and there. Knoxville himself found less, too little difference between his Steve and Jeffie characters. Sometimes you could tell by the plot that he had switched, but it was barely visible in his character. Then the real mentally handicapped people were a lot more fun.

With Heigl as the romantic subject, I could have guessed that it would all be very well-behaved, typical film for her, although the humor of Knoxville is still sparse. But as a whole still too good, too predictable and not funny enough.

1.5*
