Mary 'Mame' Carson (Jane Russell) is the heiress to a large Texas oil company. Her betrothed is frightened by her newfound wealth and leaves with the northern sun. So Mame decides to take a boat trip. During the cruise she hopes to meet a man who is to become her husband. However, she goes incognito, so that the suitors in question know nothing about wealth and will not be attracted or repulsed by it.
