The Farmer Takes a Wife plot

Young Dan Farrow (Henry Fonda) hopes to save some money to buy a farm of his own. To earn the money, he takes a job on a boat on a canal. There he meets Molly Larkins (Janet Gaynor) and the two fall in love. Their future doesn't look bright, though, as Dan dreams of becoming a farmer and Molly can't leave the boating behind.
