"Are there laughs before death?"
Sonny Lawson decides to kill himself after learning that he is terminally ill. He attempts suicide. The attempt fails and he enters an institution where the mad Marlon seeks friendship with him. The trouble only really starts when Marlon helps Sonny to put an end to it.

Critics were sharply divided over this Burt Reynolds-directed black comedy about Wendell Sonny Lawson [Reynolds] who decides to commit suicide after being told he has less than a year to live. The weaker moments in 'The End', however, come when the film threatens to take a somewhat serious tone, including when Wendell says goodbye to his daughter [Kristy McNichol]. Reynolds' crying fit in an elevator, however, is hilarious, as is a scene involving a funeral procession. But the film really takes off in the last 40 minutes when Wendell enlists the help of a paranoid schizophrenic [Dom DeLuise] to commit suicide. DeLuise and Reynolds make a fantastic comedy duo and provide plenty of laughs, right up to the final scene.
