In sun-drenched California, Morris Buttermaker (Matthau), a former Minor League baseball pro who now cleans half-soaked swimming pools, takes a job coaching Little League team The Bears. The almost offensive mix of often foul-mouthed boys from diverse backgrounds fits remarkably well with the sour, disinterested new coach who constantly yells 'Shut up!' calls. But the baseball doesn't get any better. However, the raw wisdom of the children makes Buttermaker sober and with the attraction of sports girl Amanda (O'Neal) and James Dean rascal (Haley), The Bears become 'Bad News' for opponents.
