The Art of Self-Defense isn't what you expected at the end of the film, given the beginning. I liked this dichotomy and makes the film very playful. Jesse Eisenberg is clearly the man for this job. This is a very original movie!

Very nice.

At times quite grim and dark, perhaps even a little too much given the somewhat limited absurd approach, but I easily forgive a film like this. There aren't very many of these kinds of films, so I'll be happy when one comes along for a long time. And furthermore, Stearns is certainly not bad at it.

Eisenberg has already had an impressive career together. Is often in somewhat more special films that stick with me, and even if the films are a bit worse, it is never really his fault. You have to be able to tolerate him a bit, because he is an actor with a distinctive style, but I like him.

The only thing I missed a bit was that it could have been just a little more absurd, especially in terms of premise. In that sense, it's a bit more of a parody of the whole American karate hype a few decades ago. Stearns may draw some absurd situations from that premise, but the rest is quite grounded. This is probably also because I watched two Dupieux's last month, which does "absurd & deadpan" just a bit better than Stearns.

But otherwise a pleasant, funny and unpredictable film. Not a classic comedy, but also not a film that needs further genre classifications as far as I'm concerned. Just a thoroughbred and well-executed black/absurd/deadpan comedy. More of this please.

3.5*

Haha great movie. Put Fight Club's overrated junk right in the corner where the punches fall.
