The $5 Baby plot
A homeless man called the "Solitary Kid" finds an abandoned baby, Ruth, on a sidewalk, with a note promising a large reward on the girl's eighteenth birthday. The Solitary Kid "picks her up" for five dollars with Ben Shapinsky, a Jewish pawnbroker, who raises the child as his own. Eventually, Ruth turns eighteen, and the Solitary Kid, who has continued to pay interest on his five-dollar "loan," returns to the pawnbroker and demands Ruth back. When Shapinsky refuses to hand over the girl, he insists on $10,000. Ruth overhears the offer and informs the police.
