“Love is easy. Did you know that? It's the rest of this shit that's hard.”

Intense relationship drama with some flaws. Drinking plays a big role in the lives of Kate and Charlie, and that has an impact on their lives. But it doesn't really want to be very compelling because you never have the feeling that it can really go wrong. Except their relationship then.

The film focuses on Kate and Winstead does a great job of playing her drunken outbursts. But I liked her even better when she is sober and starts to feel the real pain. Aaron Paul plays a mature and restrained Jesse Pinkman and while it is a becomes a bit monotonous, he does it like no other. As a relationship drama, Smashed is successful, but as a personal drama, the film falls short.

A solid film that is not boring, but that is the best part. It also does not really have the ambition to make a big impression, and in terms of story, not everything is really done. For example, towards the end, it is decided to skip a year from the story, and as a viewer you still get the feeling that you have missed a lot. The strongest asset is the sublime acting of Winstead, she holds our attention from beginning to end and is a lady we will hear a lot more about. Paul's one-dimensional acting is rather pale in comparison. All in all not really bad, but over the years I have seen films about the subject of alcoholic lovers that were more intense (Leaving Las Vegas, Clean and Sober) or, in all sadness, funnier (Barfly), so I will quickly forget this one.

Not very interesting and very direct drama film about the tragic course of a love affair. Smashed and director James Ponsoldt profit mainly from the cast members, because Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul play very strong roles that are undoubtedly convincing. The characters do not get a lot, but everyone does the maximum with the minimal resources they are allocated. To a certain extent, it compensates for the not very distinctive direction and the extremely predictable story. What is not compensated for is the lack of innovation or escalation, because actually everything within the world of Smashed remains very tame and familiar. After half an hour, this relatively short film is actually already finished and as a viewer I felt more inclined to clean my own house than to continue watching with interest.
