Sluzhebnyy Roman plot

Anatoli Yefremovich Novoseltsev works in a statistical office, the director of which is a bossy, unattractive woman. An old friend of his, Yuri Grigorievich Samokhvalov, who is appointed assistant director, wants to make Novoseltsev department head, but Ludmila Prokopievna Kalugina refuses. Samokhvalov then advises Novoseltsev to flirt carefully with the boss.
