Slow Learners is a variation on the classic romcom When Harry Met Sally... (1989). The film depicts a friendship between a man and a woman that, through fits and starts, blossoms into love. Slow Learners connects this theme with two very late coming-of-age stories. At its center are Jeff and Anne, who aren't necessarily likable but behave very neurotically and struggle to fit in socially. This behavior creates both painful and humorous scenes.

Finding a partner is high on their agenda, but of course, it's not going well. Both are teachers and decide to adopt a different lifestyle during the summer holidays. To become more outgoing. To be cool. To finally hook someone. The story is predictable but not boring. Plenty of funny things happen within the story to keep me entertained. I kept thinking of a sitcom. Pretty funny.

I found Slow Learners' non-romantic approach to the rom-com particularly striking. In both Jeff and Anne's work, the positive and sweet aspects are emphasized not by their positive or sweet nature, but by their negative and exhausting aspects. Neither ever becomes the sympathetic underdogs whom you, as a viewer, wish well.

The dialogue isn't consistently strong. I always look forward to funny dialogue and one-liners. Those were a bit disappointing in this film. The humor is more rooted in the unnatural behavior of the two main characters and the difficulty they have adapting to the cool world. And that's entertaining, ranging from reasonable to good.
