No, the film did not convince me, although I really wanted to see it. Rumours is a political satire and is absurd at times. A strange film, but one that paints an uncomplicated, almost childishly simple picture of 7 powerful world leaders who apparently come to chat about trivial matters on a German estate. An unnamed world crisis is raised, but the context is one of non-commitment and relaxation.

Here and there some absurd moments, surrealistic ones too, but it all meanders a bit too much. For me it could have been sharper and more daring. I even found it boring at times although the setting did appeal to me.

The surrealistic one contains some minimal horror elements - genre cat and mouse game where they would die one by one like in the first slasher. But it didn't convince me. I found it a mess of loose ideas that were only moderately successful.

German Chancellor Hilda Orlmann [Cate Blanchett] is hosting the G7 in Dankerode. Away from the camera and in the wild, personal shortcomings and insecurities come to the surface, but shortly after a communications network is shut down, these world leaders discover that they are completely dependent on each other to survive this G7 meeting. The premise is interesting and the cast is excellent, but the script misses many opportunities for razor-sharp satire. This could and should have been much better.

It must have seemed like a nice or maybe even a good idea, somewhere early in the history of this production. Otherwise you wouldn't explain that a Blanchett, a Dance, a Vikander let themselves be enticed for this. But the execution is mainly boring, meaningless, and the makers don't make fun of their target but mainly of themselves. The few moments that are funny or meaningful, maybe even useful, disappear completely in the tangle of dullness and failed ideas. It is not at all a satire on politics - rather a parable on the conscious, intended, or even sought-after ignorance of the makers.

What is a mystery to me is how this monstrosity was able to get released. A huge lack of self-respect in the production at the very least, but it also amazes me that this list of actors did not draw a red line somewhere. Your name is still attached to it.
