Pretty okay.

Sandler and Netflix have not yet scored highly together, but every now and then a decent comedy comes out of it. This is one of those. Not really sharp or edgy, but with a mellow wink that mainly creates an airy atmosphere.

The setting is luxurious and summery, Sandler and Aniston make a nice duo and the rest of the cast joins in nicely. All thick-set characters, of course, as it should be in a film like this one. Murder Mystery occasionally playfully pokes fun at the genre, but just as often joins in the fun. Newacheck finds a pretty nice balance there.

Murder Mystery isn't a great movie, but at a time when it's a matter of digging deep to find a full-blooded comedy, this is a welcome filler. It's not really memorable, but it flows smoothly, it remains light and entertaining the whole time.

After seeing Just Go with It recently, a decent comedy that was a bit less than I thought I remembered, and the relatively poor reception of this film, my expectations for Murder Mystery were tempered. Still, I still had hopes that this could be a fun movie.

Fortunately, that hope turned out not to be completely unfounded, because Murder Mystery is a very entertaining 'whodunnit'. The humor is quite erratic. You get a lot of jokes that don't catch on and then it's a bit painful when you see them presenting Adam Sandler with a wide grin. On the other hand, a lot of scenes do work; moments that made me laugh out loud. Those moments are roughly balanced by Jennifer Aniston and Sandler, proving to be a good team here for the second time. By the way, I thought the chemistry between them here might have been a bit better than in Just Go with It, but that may be related to the fact that they mainly revolve around each other in Murder Mystery, since they've been a couple from the start in Murder Mystery.

The supporting characters are nice too. Sandler's group of friends stayed at home this time, limiting the corniness. Luke Evans, Gemma Arterton and Dany Boon do a great job. They play running caricatures, but in a movie like this they know not to disturb. Of course it is a nice side effect that you as a viewer can also play the Sherlock Holmes, which also ensures that you stay on track. Moreover, the beautiful locations in Italy are of course a big plus.

An airy road viewer with a pleasant summer atmosphere. Unlikely that the film will stay with most of us for a long time, but I thought this was a great piece of work by Adam. He has made better movies, but also much worse. As far as I'm concerned, he can definitely work with Jennifer Aniston again in the future.

I'm just having fun, it's a boat!

I didn't expect it but this is a fine piece of unpretentious entertainment. Sandler and Aniston share a casual chemistry as the bickering Spitzes, who can poop but love each other nonetheless. As a somewhat run-down couple, they are involved in (yes) a murder mystery during a European trip of unexpected luxury.

It's no more than a farcical variation of an episode of Poirot - think of the tone of Scooby Doo - with all the suspicions, haphazard motives and disclosure that entails. It's not much but it's fun enough to follow and it paves the way for enough funny observations of our lead roles.

The diverse supporting roles mainly consist of thick-set characters, with faint features with just enough durability to entertain the playing time; it's the casually sarcastic commentary by Sandler in particular that manages to keep it together.

With beautiful European locations as a backdrop and the summery jet-set life as a setting, there is plenty of room for investigative whispers and childishly designed conspiracies, which manage to captivate for a good hour and a half. Small and entertaining: 3*
