Martha Alston (Ellen DeGeneres) is a talented thirty-something who works for a local television station. She feels the pressure of her environment and family to start a family. But she herself believes that it will all come naturally. One day she meets the successful Whitman Crawford (Bill Pullman). Martha falls hopelessly in love and her life becomes a drawn-out romantic comedy.
