Monsieur plot
When his wife dies in a car accident, wealthy banker René Duchesne (Jean Gabin) decides to drown himself in the Seine. He changes his mind at the last minute when his former maid Suzanne (now working as a prostitute) tells him that his wife was having an affair. Instead of killing himself, René chooses a new life, with a new identity. First, he teams up with a gang of thieves to break the safe at his home, losing his money-hungry relatives. He then goes to work as a maid for a wealthy family, finding that this job is more difficult than that of a banker.
