Quentin Dupieux stands for absurd cinema. He has already proven that with Rubber and Realité. Here in his latest film Le Daim he does it again. Watching all that craziness in amazement. Georges who has such an obsession with a deerskin coat that no one is allowed to wear a coat anymore and then he also talks to the coat. How do you come up with that? It even went so far that Georges did everything he could to prevent this, using an old fan blade as a weapon. The scene where he slammed the blade through the roof of the car and it went straight through the skull of that young woman was hilarious. The look of that woman. Furthermore, this film had several scenes where you seemed to sense what would happen, but where the scene in question went in a completely different direction. No matter how unbelievable it all is, what this director pulls out of his hat is certainly original. Not everyone seems to appreciate this because I was the only one in the cinema.

3.5*

Second Dupieux.

A filmmaker who really seems to actively want to be distinctive. I rarely see films that try so hard to appear original and you can like that or not. Sometimes I find it too forced, but the bone-dry way with which Dupieux completes his films has only convinced me so far. This also applies to Deerskin, fortunately.

It takes a while for the film to kick off, however, and even for a very short running time of under 80 minutes, it feels like the introduction goes on a bit too long. The concept is ridiculous, but it works. Especially because Dupieux delivers it in a tone that you can secretly watch. The humor was a bit mediocre for me, but not because it is that bad, but because it cannot be appreciated by everyone, including myself. It's just a bit too dry for me.

When the film added some horror elements I was able to watch it well, but besides that, everything about this film just feels 'right'. Perfect tone, exactly the right stylization and a progression that is never boring. Add to that a rather exceptional role by Dujardin and Deerskin was born; an entertaining, short and bizarre film.

Dark when it should be dark. Deerskin is probably one of the more unusual films you will find, and I'm guessing this is no different with Dupieux's other films. It is wafer-thin in terms of content, but there will always be something behind it for a specific audience. I especially enjoy the tone and few horror scenes, which I thought were very successful. Deerskin leaves you with question marks, but also with smiles. Pretty fun for once.

The film reveals little about the history of the main character and that creates the necessary mystery. Mystery fits the absurdism of a man obsessed with his new coat. That coat almost seems to become a character in itself.

In addition to the somewhat crazy Jean Dujardin, it is always fun to see the fantastic Adèle Haenel. The only real counter to the lead role in this film. Other than that, you just have to let the film wash over you. It is a relatively slow story, but it does have the necessary black humor and absurd scenes. A nice surprise.
