When Ray discovers his wife is cheating, he decides to commit suicide. He buys a gun and drives to a seedy motel. When he is about to do the deed, he is mistaken for a cheap assassin. Desperate for a little respect, and with nothing else to live for, Ray decides to take the job. Soon Ray wishes he had just killed himself.

Smooth crime comedy that is somewhat reminiscent of Fargo (1996) by the Coen brothers, but does not reach that level. The plot twists follow each other in rapid succession and make for an entertaining whole. The movie exceeded my expectations.

Hit man Harry [Dylan Baker] has just finished a job when he is ordered to travel to LaRoy, a desert town with about 300 inhabitants in Texas. When he arrives, he finds someone else doing his work for him. And that is a problem, because it involves (literally) a large suitcase of money. Director and screenwriter Atkinson was very much inspired by Fargo, but comes with more than enough of his own ideas and amusing characters to stay afloat. Standouts are Steve Zahn, as the ambitious and affectionate local “detective” Skip, and Mide LeDoux as Midge, the extremely friendly-looking wife of an adulterous lawyer [Brad Leland]. There is also a nice soundtrack full of relaxing country & western songs.

A good cast, but that's about it, because we've all seen better and more fun - on all levels. I can't really think of anything that this film does really well, and the fact that nothing really goes wrong isn't really enough. You'd better watch Fargo again. Or No Country for Old Men. Or The Old Man and the Gun. Or countless other variations on the theme.
