Kill Me Please plot

Doctor Kruger is a pioneer who is determined to introduce suicide into modern society. He dreams of creating a therapeutic framework in which medicine intervenes to channel the destructive urges of the desperate, or the patients. In his private clinic, he receives his patients every day and listens to them. He studies with them the motives that justify their future suicide – or not. When their decision is made, they are entitled to one last wish: a special breakfast, an excellent wine, a personal whim. Doctor Kruger is a humanist who wants to soften the death of others. But in the lonely mountains where the good doctor pursues the dream of the ideal suicide, something reminds him that no one can control death: death itself.

The first half of the film was atmospheric and original. The structure is careful and tasteful and the characters seem interesting enough at first glance. In the second half of the film, all the good preliminary work is expertly destroyed. Just briefly. There could have been much, much more there. There are more than enough good ideas, but they are only there for a 45-minute film. The rest that comes after that may not have a name. Ambiguous film that, on the whole, deserves the rating of Mediocre.

Initially I didn't think this was a comedy at all, but then the film turns into a black comedy with the forest walk as the highlight. Unfortunately, this trend does not last long and the film descends into absurdity, leaving one guessing as to its meaning. Not to break it completely, because no matter how many distasteful scenes pile up towards the end, the film retains a certain tension and what remains especially to be praised is the acting of the actors, where the compliment does not go to protagonist Aurélien Recoing, but to Bouli Lanners.

This film has a lot of potential because of the intriguing concept, but the execution remains rather sloppy and not always interesting. We are in a world where suicide is regulated. Not everyone is happy with this, but the aim of the institution is to let people say goodbye to the world in a quiet (planned) way. The way they want it and often this is accompanied by a last wish. So no more cutting your wrists or throwing yourself in front of trains or off buildings.

Yes, I would like to die like that too. A man who administers poison to himself through a sip of champagne and then makes love to a beautiful wench. There are worse ways to meet your end. I should remember... You also immediately gain insight into the wishes or desires of others. It could have been spicier, too bad.

But the film also has a comedic angle. When someone commits suicide the old fashion way they do everything they can to save him. Or when a shooting raid takes place, everyone runs for their lives, simply because they had a different method of (suicide)kill in mind.

Interesting, but not always well executed. There was much more to it. It was nice to see Belgian actors Benoît Poelvoorde and Clara Cleymans (Yummy) in this French-Belgian production. Floating between 3.0 and 3.5*.
