Italy at the time of Mussolini's fascist regime. In a town on Lake Maggiore, a group of friends gather at night in a hotel basement to play cards and, if convenient, visit the local brothel. But the friends are also terrified of the blackshirts of the vigilante, because nighttime card games and brothel visits are strictly prohibited.
