Il Decameron plot

"Ribaldry! Rakes and libertines. Raised skirts and lowered lashes. A blush on every cheek. Pasolini. Filming The Decameron. Bringing life to art...and art to life."

Pasolini has filmed nine stories with Il Decameron from the book of the same name by Giovanni Boccaccio. In which Pasolini makes fun of the church in a well-known way and adds a good liberal dose of life and love.

Human weaknesses and defects as well as institutions (the Church) are easily subjected to Pasolini's demolition hammer in a special but enjoyable film.

A few unsavory scenes, a good dose of eroticism and a generally mischievous atmosphere.

A big compliment to the actors who portray all kinds of characters excellently, from ordinary to extreme.

It is not self-evident that a work like the Decameron survived medieval censorship. Of the hundred stories, eight have been used here, also in a frame story. In Pasolini's eroticism tends towards the scabrous and the perverse, with feces and flatulence, with references to necrophilia and bestialism. Only the story of the nightingale has tenderness. On several occasions, a surprising twist provides a favorable outcome for those looking for secret fun. There is a lot of satire in it, especially on the hypocrisy of Catholicism with its strict norms and values.

Medieval elements are the ruins, the frescoes and the poor clothing. Neapolitan dialect is spoken. Ugly teeth can be seen, very different from those perfect, blanched teeth from American series. It is a colorful and daring spectacle in which man is shown as a being who is guided by his lower instincts.

Pasolini will never be my great friend. I find his film not very accessible and rather heavy. I'm back in the middle with the film adaptation of Boccaccio's Il Decameron. A very nice satirical approach to church morality. First of all, on chaste celibacy. Haha, it's funny how horny those nuns were when that deaf and mute gardener stayed within their walls. And a little further, he also poked fun at the sinfulness of man, with that one clergyman just minimizing it all.

It is mainly individual fragments of scenes that I mainly remember. With these separate narratives, there is little substantive structure to be seen. Instead you get a colorful collection of amateur actors who give the best of themselves. Some humor, lightness and fun. The Middle Ages couldn't have been that bad, could they? Anyway, I didn't think it should take longer than an hour and three quarters. Amusing for once, but this didn't have to be milked until 3 o'clock, for example.
