Sometimes I really doubled up. I think Gervais is a brilliant Comedy actor. What he conveys with his loser head is masterful. The part with the dog haha, classic!

Other than that, it's a predictable rom-com, but it never gets annoying. A comedic twist on The Sixth Sense. Nice to have seen.

Seen years ago, and rated with four stars. Watched it again yesterday and it was set a bit too high at the time, actually. Still a very decent film, if you're in the mood for it (as I apparently did the first time) even quite good. Romantic comedy with Gervais in a beautifully subdued and effective lead role as a dentist who also sees dead people. Leoni, not the best actress, is very aborable and believable here. Greg Kinnear delivers the best acting performance in a difficult role, similar to Richard Dreyfuss in Always, but unlike him then Kinnear strikes the right note here. All in all, not a film of the roar of laughter, but more of the satisfied smile. A bit too moralistic perhaps, but still nice to see, especially with Christmas approaching.

Mediocre.

The problem is that as uberBrit, Gervais just doesn't really belong in the setting. A very American cast in a very American city, often also very American humour, with Gervais who occasionally gets a bit lost. And I don't just mean his character.

This is especially true for the comedy. Nice when Gervais is busy with himself, with his typical smile, his mumbling and his creepy teething grin. But together with the other actors it's a lot less fun, the more corny ending doesn't make it any better.

But it's not bad either, Gervais is in the spotlight enough for that and his character is also nice enough. A fairly entertaining film otherwise, although the beginning is clearly better than the end. Typical since the comedy/drama balance is completely wrong again and the drama doesn't really work.

2.5*
