Nice strange film, which will be just a bit more interesting for (non-commercial) music lovers.

We follow a rather improbable story of a struggling attic musician who can suddenly record an album with an avant-garde band. And then at SXSW too.

The opening scene -"where do I get the inspiration for a text"- is great. The band is strange, just like its (experimental) music. Not all characters are equally well developed, Gyllenhaal is a bit irritating. The humor subtle. Secretly, the story is quite straightforward and quite thin, towards the end the dramatic part is a bit exaggerated.

Oddly enough, the music still does something, sometimes it feels like a random act-because-it-can, sometimes the early Joy Division feeling comes to the fore. That atmosphere is very well created. The I Love You All ending scene really kicks in. I'm just going to listen to that soundtrack.

“Miserable childhood. Mental illness. Where do I find that kind of inspiration?”

Difficult movie to rate. The acting is strong and the band, but also the quarrels between the members of a starting rock band yield some nice scenes. But I couldn't do much with the story, and the characters were also sometimes annoying to follow and watch. The character Frank has a lot of potential, but in the end he remains a character instead of a flesh and blood person. As good as Fassbender is.
