Rare book dealer Joel Sloane is also a part-time private investigator. Joel finds stolen or long-lost rare books for insurance companies and gets a reward for returning them. Otto Brockler, also a rare book dealer but with questionable ethics, is murdered. The list of suspects is long. First, Ned Morgan, who was sent to prison by Otto to collect the insurance money himself and to keep him away from his wife Leah Brockler. Then there's Leah, who is in love with wrongly convicted Ned. The silent partner in stolen and forged books Elias Z. 'Eli' Bannerman is also a suspect. Finally, there are master forgers of rare books Sydney Langner and Julia Thorne, Otto's secretary and owner of expensive clothes and jewellery. Joel must find the killer before he becomes the next victim...
