Drowning Mona plot

"The death of Mona Dearly wasn't so much a whodunnit, as a who didn't."

The peace in the village of Verplanck in New York is disturbed when Mona Dearly ends up with her car in the Hudson and drowns. At first it is thought to be an accident, but local police chief Wyatt soon finds out that it is a murder. However, it turns out that it is not so easy to find the killer, because everyone in the village hated the victim. Consequently, there are plenty of motives and suspects.

Idea was nice, execution crap. The cars were nice but not enough to really raise the level. 1.5 stars.

I was very disappointed. With a star cast like Danny DeVito and Jamie Lee Curtis this really couldn't go wrong.. It did! Those flashbacks were so annoying and tedious. Also never really had to laugh. DeVito and Curtis are the only reason why I'm still giving this 1*. I am willing to give the film one more chance because I had a bit of a headache yesterday, but I have enough comedies that I didn't feel good about that I can still give a reasonable pass, so it's strange that this one doesn't get that... Too bad!

1.0*

15 years ago I saw it on TV, I feel like it was a long time ago, but given the release in 2000 that's not possible, and at the time it stuck as a reasonable comedy. I was surprised about the very low ratings and therefore I curiously picked up the film again.

We take a large cast, a town where rarely or never anything happens, an atmosphere with crazy gimmicks like the Yugo's and eccentric, we know each other basis and characters comparable to a Coen Brothers production. So far so good you might say... although the film of course can't touch the level of the better Coen Brothers.

The story about Mona is nice, where everyone still has a bone to pick and everyone has an interest in something happening to her. This is told in a funny way, insofar as that phenomenon of some characters who rather trip over proverbial punch lines than solve something. The actual reason and punch line with Bobby who wants to get rid of Jeff, sabotage and car swapping, is very obvious, and after an hour the still quite entertaining story collapses completely when he confesses this. The final testimony of Clarence is then again a nice side step, but the Benny Bill-like run-up to the end is then again too much.

Drowning Mona, used to be good but now outdated, although it's not a bad seat in my opinion.
