When his Italian housekeeper Maria has to travel to Italy for urgent family matters, the otherworldly literature professor Robert Senden is faced with an almost impossible task: he must take over the care of Maria's godson Ricky. When Ricky learns that his father is in a hospital in Trieste after an accident, Robert decides to take the boy to Italy. There the rigid professor thaws and gives in to his true feelings towards Maria.
