Well, well... About a dime a dozen 'feel good rom-com'. (Luckily I didn't realize this is from the same makers as Notting Hill and Bridget Jones's Diary, otherwise it would have been a big disappointment.)

“I had two serious girlfriends... and then some other smattering of other women.”

Still a bit of a guilty pleasure. The film has an irresistible charm about it and the story has an original angle that unravels like a love mystery. It soon became clear to me who Will would end up with (Isla Fisher duh) but who the mother was remains unclear for a long time.

Due to the setting (the American presidential elections in the 90s) and the music, the film has a nostalgic atmosphere about it and because of the strong tempo the film does not sink into anything. Reynolds is always strong and certainly has a nice chemistry with Weisz and Fisher. Breslin is a little too smart for her age as a daughter, but she does it well and certainly in the end she has some nice moments. The film does not go very deep and sometimes it is all very short sighted, but in one way or another I just don't bother with this film. Irresistible indeed…

Not good.

Reynolds is way too smooth and his opponents all lack chemistry with him. Each and every one of them is also fairly annoying wisecracking characters, although it is mainly his daughter who is going to walk away with that prize. What an insufferable child that was.

Definitely, Maybe is an everyday Hollywood romcom, one where the course is clear from the very beginning. There may be some detours to be made (which actually lengthens the playing time unnecessarily), but that last scene is anything but a surprise.

That in itself is forgivable for a film like this, but not if there is no romance in it at all, it manages to captivate even a little. It is a film that dutifully follows the book, but never manages to hit the right note. Hollywood money only gets you so far, apparently that's just enough to get a 1.5* out of the fire.

1.5*
