Comoara mainly works as a concept. Where many other directors come up with plot twists to spice things up (a corpse or a gun or a love interest, etc.), Porumboiu lets everything go exactly according to the men's plan. And that is refreshing, because the plan is not without flaws and the men are not exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer. As in his previous films, Porumboiu paints a picture of a tough bureaucratic system. However, that does not seem to be the main focus of Comoara; the film is a kind of celebration of the new capitalism, which is also flourishing in Eastern Europe. And ends perfectly on the ironic notes of Laibach. Life is Life! Lalalalala.

The story is one that could have served as a children's adventure film.
Porumboiu makes it something different and special when he quietly and unnoticed draws you into a number of scenes that really shine because of their simplicity: first of all the mining scene, but also the development of the plan between the two neighbors, the negotiations for the detector, the scenes in the police station, the bank, the jewelry store... and what about the dazzling end credits that underline the background of the film.
There is of course more: the film explains how the little man who also dreams of being able to rise above, to grab some power, to be the hero,... is played and deceived, lives in a bureaucratic and corrupt society with all kinds of regulations that turn against him and make him resigned and paralyzed.
I found it surprisingly enjoyable and somewhat poorly rewarded in the score.

It is not very flattering how the Romanian director and writer Corneliu Porumboiu describes the state of affairs in his country. It is rather depressing to see how everyone tries to earn some extra money with shady tricks. Corruption and lies are the order of the day. This also applies to Costi, who has always adhered to the rules as a civil servant, but who, in light of his participation in the excavation of a treasure, suddenly no longer takes those rules so seriously.

At the beginning of the film we see Costi reading the story of Robin Hood to his son. The story of the highwayman who stole from the rich and gave the loot to the poor. Robin Hood who did not do everything according to the rules, but did so in the name of justice. Costi and his buddy Adrian think they are in the right. The treasure belongs to them and to get your rights you may break some rules. The mischievous approach that Prumboiu chooses makes the film look fairly light-hearted despite the depressing circumstances.

So don't expect a film with jokes and slapstick, but find the humor in the absurdities that the scenario offers coupled with the gloomy seriousness with which the characters do their thing. In Romania no one ever seems to laugh. At least that is the thought that comes to mind when watching the film. I'm not Romanian and I had a good laugh about all the complications every now and then. Treasure hunting seems to become more senseless and a fruitless endeavor with each new load of sand and pieces of metal that are enthusiastically scooped up. Feelings of despair and disillusionment increase. The mutual rift too. It is wonderful tragicomedy.

During the course we absorb some Romanian history and enjoy a surprising ending. Comoara is a pleasant place to sit.
