Although I sometimes find Lanthimos' films a bit overrated or even downright annoying, this one hits the mark. It credibly combines current themes like conspiracy theories, information bubbles, capitalism and the destruction of life, genetic modification, sexual abuse, and extraterrestrial life, and the film is both ridiculous and intelligent, both funny and horrifying. Ultimately, the film itself is a mindfuck that plays with the confusion of what is real and what isn't, deliberately playing with the viewer's expectations. And the icing on the cake is an important message through the reversal that aliens don't want to destroy us, but save us from ourselves: humanity is the genetically failed experiment that is destroying life on Earth and itself. The result is a film as delightful as it is masterful.

Woemi doesn't want to go to Lanthimos anymore. Even with Kinds of Kidness, she no longer found him merely absurdist, with an unmistakable message behind it: homo homini lupus est, one man is a wolf to another, but downright sadistic.

Perhaps I should agree with her as she progresses. There was still a good laugh in the room. But the shameless display of femicide, of the Trumpian distrust of a backward, ignorant base of supporters against an elite conspiring against them, only out for self-enrichment and exploitation—what's there to laugh about, really?

It's time for filmmakers to take responsibility, and for Lanthimos to take a break, as Woemi told me.

Great, great! I saw in some quality newspapers that the critics are a bit done with Lanthimos, but I found this to be his most entertaining film I've seen so far. I haven't seen the South Korean original, so everything was new to me. That might help.

Anyway, it was a great movie. I didn't laugh often, but I was constantly smiling inwardly in the cinema. The performances were also fantastic, both from the conspiracy theorists and the kidnapped alien. I think it was the first time I didn't find Emma Stone annoying. She's a great actress, actually.

You can't say much about the story without spoiling it. Even that comment is a spoiler in a way. Luckily, MovieMeter has spoiler formatting. Great site, by the way.

I kept in mind the whole time that the CEO was actually an alien, so that didn't come as a surprise, but after that anticipated plot twist, I still found the ending quite beautiful. Those crazy alien knitwear, of course, but especially the images of extinct humanity. It all looked very peaceful. If we're going to end up like this, let's hope for the best.
