Bridget Jones's Diary plot

"All women keep score... Only the great ones put it in writing."

Bridget Jones is thirty-two, smokes bonkers, drinks at a fast rate, her love life seems to be in a permanent crisis and she's still single and - as if it wasn't bad enough herself - is constantly reminded of that by her family and friends. She wants to bring change in her life. Her New Year's resolutions include losing weight drastically and looking for a nice, sensible man. The clumsy Bridget wants to get a grip on her life, but of course she doesn't achieve her goals effortlessly. She buys a diary in which she writes down all her experiences. Her boss Daniel Cleaver is an attractive man. She flirts with him, but has doubts. When she wants to stick to her intentions, the choice doesn't seem so difficult, but still...

“It is a truth universally acknowledged that when one part of your life starts going okay, another falls spectacularly to pieces.”

Bridget Jones hasn't lost any of its charm yet. We already saw that this year with the entertaining third part Baby, and this first part is still fun. The first encounter with the clumsy Bridget is funny, sentimental and heartwarming.

Renée Zellweger immediately fits into her role and from the first minute she knows how to take the viewer into Bridget's crazy adventures. Firth is a hero as Mark Darcy and Hugh Grant is visibly having fun in his role as womanizer Daniel Cleaver. The film has flair, speed, wonderfully cool humor and catchy music. A more than successful introduction from Bridget Jones.

British romance.

I had already seen part three, but the first two films have never crossed my path before. Since they have now been added to Netflix, it is the time to complete this well-known romantic threesome, although the expectations were not too high.

It's a bit dusty and exaggerated, but the typically British makes it charming again. That's what you really have to do in this film. Zellweger, Firth and Grant are doing quite well, but the material they have to work with doesn't really give it the space to really unpack.

For once it still looks nice, if only because the film is fortunately not too long and there is just enough humor in it to keep touching the next plot point. I don't think it's great, although I can see why a film like this has finally become so popular.

Bridget Jone's Diary a film that was the best for a long time and carried the stereotypically successful rom-com. After the last viewing I actually started to find it a bit bland. Humor is less sharp than I always thought.
