Brewster's Millions plot

"An American excess story."

When a wealthy relative of Brewster dies, Brewster is tested to see if he knows the value of money. He must spend $30 million within 30 days. This seems easy, but he can't make any gains and he can't just throw it away. If he succeeds, he will receive 300 million dollars. Another downside is that he's not allowed to tell anyone how and why, so everyone thinks he's crazy.

Why the admirable Hill tackled this comedy remains a mystery. He can't handle it. If even Pryor and Candy can't save the movie, something is wrong. Average.

Brewster's Millions is the Richard Pryor movie that has always stayed with me. Watched it several times in the past. I always thought this was a fun and light-hearted comedy in which Pryor sometimes comes across as a bit crazy. John Candy still plays a decent supporting role.

Perhaps a bit dated for the 'youth of today', because it is an 80's comedy, but for me nice nostalgia.

Making such a mediocre film with such a brilliant idea (spending 30 million in 30 days) is just a shame. With a little effort, a much better movie could have come out of this. Pryor is not my favorite actor with his screaming mannerisms. There are satirical winks at populism and greed embedded in the story, but that doesn't make it any better. The substandard jokes didn't do much for me and the ending was sewn on very quickly. One of Walter Hill's weakest films, who is more at home with action films.
