Strange film that you would not immediately attribute to Loach: a historical youth film based on a fairly obscure author. Also dates from his early period. Black Jack is set in 1750 and is about the friendship between Tolly, a boy who is gently coerced into going out with a rogue who has risen from the dead, and a girl who is considered crazy. Despite the title, I thought Black Jack was only a supporting role; he does come out of the corner heroically at the end, but usually causes problems.

Is very roughly filmed with limited resources and has a realistic look that should underline the unromantic character of this period. In period films you often see people in clean clothes and living in beautiful picturesque houses but he bravely avoids that, and that for a youth film. I also found the way in which all these 18th century people interacted with each other fun to follow. Ultimately a little less suitable for young people but worth watching as a Loach lover because this film threatened to be completely forgotten.
