Bedazzled plot

"Meet the Devil. She's giving Elliott seven wishes. But not a chance in Hell."

Elliot Richards is unpopular, his social life is nonexistent, his profession as a technical consultant is small and he also harbors an unrequited love for his colleague Alison Gardner. Tired of the humiliation, Elliot begs for a better life and Alison's love. His surprise is great when it appears that his plea has been answered. His cry for help is answered by none other than the Devil himself. But of course there is a price to be paid: the Devil wants Elliot's soul.

Somewhat bland, but also quite fun at the same time. Fraser and Hurley were nice to each other. In terms of jokes, it was regularly bland, but nevertheless the film was doable.

Playing with fire

When I first saw Bedazzled as a little boy in the cinema with my mother, I was particularly impressed by Hurley. For the rest I had little memory of this. However, a great opportunity for a review arose when I was able to take Bedazzled for a very cheap price and I have to say that it turned out well for me.

Although Bedazzled starts to balance more and more on the border of too sweet, especially towards the end, the damage turns out to be limited in the end. The film is also generally fine in terms of humor, although the best jokes have been after the first wish comes to an end. The wishes that follow sometimes feel a bit rushed in order to stay within the playing time, although the wish in which Elliot turns out to be gay does bring a nice comic moment. I found the way Elliot gets out of selling his soul creative and I was also surprised that Elliot didn't end with Alison.

Still, if you want something you'll have to make the most of it yourself was actually the most important message from the film and I liked how it was delivered without too much fuss. Bedazzled finishes with a decent pass for me and is also more than recommended for a hangover or rainy afternoon. It all looks nice although at the scene that Elliot ends up briefly in hell you better close your eyes for a while. These effects are really no longer possible in 2017..

3.0*

Brendan Fraser Strange (and unfortunate) I never saw this one before (as a kid). With his roles in George of the Jungle and in particular The Mummy, Fraser was an actor that I enjoyed a lot from a young age. It also helps that he had a brilliant (small) role in Scrubs and provided the best episode in that series (My Screw Up). But where he was a huge rising star in the 90s, it suddenly fell silent after the turn of the century. He disappeared from Hollywood and recently there has been more openness about this, with the most surprising and nauseating ''incident'' a real #metoo moment with one Philip Berk.

In Bedazzled he showed again that he is blessed with a wonderful, natural and above all sympathetic screen presence. Now I'm a crazy-mouth-puller anyway (Jim Carrey) and in that respect Fraser is also wonderfully wild and over the top in his facial expression and delivery. The way he diligently portrays these weird characters is pure comic class. The fact that the story and the entire decoration are rather wrong (and typical for its time) is hard to deny and will also be largely responsible for the low(er) score.
