Not exactly special.

Watched the film mainly for the cast, specifically the young Odeya Rush. Definitely a rising new acting talent if you ask me, but one who still shows up for films that are a bit too easy. Almost Friends is one of those, where she is once again cast in a kind of role that she has played before.

Almost Friends is a very typical example of an unpretentious film. Almost no ambition to be seen here, just a director who wants to tell a nice story. Sweet and nice, but in the meantime I prefer to see a film that can also breathe some feeling with its stories. This kind of flat direction has not impressed me for a long time.

Little visual effort except for a fairly sultry atmosphere. Cast does a decent job, although I find it hard to empathize with Highmore. Comes across as rather different than shy. Yet everyone does indeed play a quirky role and they owe that to solid acting experience. That is also necessary, because the film has to rely on many elements.

It is a pity that it does not distinguish itself anywhere, but a simplistic character can ultimately be forgiven. The pity is that the film does not succeed in making you feel anything. It is an entertaining snapshot from a phase of the lives of these characters, but not much more. I left the film with the same feeling as in; an empty feeling.

Since I followed The Good Doctor quite actively, I know Freddie Highmore mainly as the autistic doctor Shaun. In Almost Friends he is a different character, but I still found it hard to see him separately. The way he acts and talks is similar. The film itself is not very special and after you have seen the film you quickly forget what it was actually about. It is interesting enough to watch, but the film will quickly fade into oblivion.

Freddie Highmore is and remains a somewhat peculiar actor, who played his role as a deranged son excellently in The Bates Motel. In this comedy drama he plays the clumsy and also peculiar Charlie who seems to have all kinds of internal blockages, which makes his search for love follow a strange, blackly comic path. Yet the story is too tame and you as a viewer never get to the edge of your seat. In short, a trifle in the category of nice watchable.
