Following the Jim & Andy documentary, which has increased my appreciation for Jim Carrey as a person, this breakthrough film by Carrey came on the watch list. And despite that documentary, I continue to have mixed feelings about Jim Carrey in comedies. His face seems to be made of rubber, which has a lot of potential for humor; it is also often funny at times, but also so often it results in an overkill of funny faces.

So far two exceptions, in which the humor seems to be largely spot on. The first is The Mask where Carrey's craziness particularly strikes when he wears the mask and becomes a cartoonish person, making it fit for the situation; the second is Man on the Moon where he plays Andy Kaufman brilliantly.

Ace Ventura unfortunately falls into the usual pattern. The opening scene is hilarious, but after that it's a lot of hit and miss with the usual excess of bonkers. Furthermore, the ending is very bland with the twist that Einhorn is a man, where the jokes around it are also quite transphobic.

Worth 2* for the most part; the ending pulls it down another half for the reasons mentioned. 1.5* so.

Entertaining nonsense.

A film that actually relies entirely on Jim Carrey, because otherwise it really isn't much. Fortunately, Carrey seemed to realize that himself and he is going completely over the top here. Just what this film needed, which made it quite easy to sit through.

All extremely 90s, although this film also plays very consciously with those clichés of course. Sometimes Shadyac also seems to explicitly want to go in the parody direction, but he always holds back just in time so that it doesn't really become something like Hot Shots or Naked Gun. But it's not very far from it either.

The film is fortunately not too long, Carrey provides a regular chuckle and before you know it it is already over. Few to no boring moments, enough humor and an actor who knows what he is doing. On the other hand, it is of course not high-quality cinema, let alone a really great comedy, but it is entertaining.

2.5*

If you look back at the film now, this is still a lame film. It's a bit like the Naked Gun movies without the literal allusions in the jokes. Many jokes are also very childish. As teenagers we sometimes liked to participate in some scenes like 'lo-o-se-er' and the sliding door. Puberty humor and some quotes that stuck. That's all it is, this is somewhat in line with that incredibly annoying comedy Dumb and Dumber.
