I'm very sorry, but I think this film by the duo is the worst I've seen from them so far.

Not only were they repetitive a lot, but somehow there also seemed to be little joy in playing.

Unfortunately, I also didn't like the musical numbers and were even annoyed by them at times and that I didn't find Charles Laughton convincing in the role of Captain Kidd.

It also all feels a bit cheap, and later I understood why that was.

This film certainly has some nice moments from the duo and fortunately does not last long, but unfortunately this film as a whole does not work for me.

Abbott and Costello's second and last film in color. The film was later re-released in black and white. Universal Pictures didn't want to spend extra money to make a film in color. The duo eventually decided to do it themselves. They took advantage of a contractual agreement with Universal, which allowed them to make one independent film per year. This film was made with the help of the Woodley Productions company. Better known as Abbott's company. The Technicolor process was too expensive, so they opted for the cheaper SuperCinecolor. Charles Laughton wanted to make a great and physical comedy for a while, but could never find something suitable. He was a long-time admirer of Lou Costello and his abilities as a slapstick comedian. He wanted to learn from the best, and was therefore interested in working with the duo. Laughton was known for his sea-going roles in Devil and the Deep, Mutiny on the Bounty, Stand by for Action and Captain Kidd.

Personally, I think this Abbott and Costello movie is the least so far. The film mainly relies on the special effects of that time. We mostly see the duo running around, with little to nothing else to do. This with the exception of some clumsy moments from Lou Costello. In addition, it has more of a musical quality.
