A Serious Man plot

"…seriously!"

As Jefferson Airplane plays on the radio, the life of Jewish professor Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) falls apart in 1967. His wife wants a divorce from him, his daughter steals money from him for a nose job and his son is into rock 'n' roll and would rather smoke weed with his friends than prepare for his Bar Mitzvah. In addition, he is stuck with his socially handicapped brother who refuses to leave the house and his head is also turned by the beautiful, nude sunbathing neighbor. And since this is by no means all of Larry's problems, it is made very difficult for him to be 'a serious man'.

A fun movie directed by the Coen brothers.

The idea was to just make a film about the smoking son Danny, and his meeting with Rabbi Marshak. According to the Coen brothers, they had made up the intro. So this is further apart from the final story. The tornado towards the end of the film is also based on actual events that took place in Minnesota in 1967. The film was shot within 44 days.

The cast is well composed. Marc Maron auditioned for the lead role, and Patton Oswalt for the part of Arthur Gopnik. Eventually these spots were filled by Michael Stuhlbarg and Richard Kind. Warren Keith's voice is also featured again. His voice could previously be heard in Fargo (1996).

This is the Coen brothers' second film for Working Title Films and Focus Features. They previously made the film Burn after Reading (2008). The Coen brothers were also responsible for the assembly themselves.

The film was nominated twice for an Oscar, won 17 awards and was nominated another 70 times.

The humor of the Coen brothers hardly appeals to me. Usually their films do not succeed in eliciting more than a faint smile from me. Such is the case with this sluggish film about a man who is somewhat dazed in life in search of something to hold on to. There are some fun moments in it, but no more than that.
