“You know what Proust said. Leave pretty women to men without imagination.”

“Francis, I'm a banker. I have no imagination.”

Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe go on vacation, taking Marion Cotillard and Abbie Cornish with them. Don't blame them… This really is one of those no-nonsense films where you can dream away with (preferably) a glass of red wine in your hand.

The French Provence, beautiful surroundings, a picturesque town, atmospheric music, lots of red wine and oh yes, I had already mentioned Marion Cotillard. It is France at its most clichéd, but it does make for an extremely enjoyable film. Russell Crowe is terribly miscast, but forgive the gentlemen.

Particularly bad. Basically a real dragon. The French douceur de vivre viewed through the peasant glasses of the British/American. One: the British are the landlords, the French the lackeys. Two: French women show their ass when they want to offend someone. Three : Max apparently knows everything about wine, but he had never heard of an oenologist. Four: The first thing Max does when his cousin Christie shows up at his door is to check if it's legal in France to sew your own cousin. Five : they still play chansons by Charles Trénet on summer terraces. Six : wine and hot women are the trump cards of France. The end: yawn! And more of that nonsense. It is unknown to anyone that the Americans see France as a classy travel destination or place of exile. But as was to be expected, this film has nothing interesting to say at all.

Scott's comedy.

It will never really become my favorite director. Not in personality or career. Especially nowadays I think he's quite a jerk who wants to be in the media a little too much because of some brutal statement. Such news naturally spreads like wildfire, and Scott was no different.

This time Scott opts for a different environment than the usual American background. The film was shot in France. For us Europeans, that may be a more familiar environment, but to Americans it must have come across as healing water. In any case, I think it is a pleasant environment. Very calming, beautifully authentic.

Acting is not particularly special, it is mainly that Crowe and his group can never seem really brilliant. The characters are just too flat for that. What further only completely counteracts the film is the humor, which, despite the background, is still very American. A bit too clumsy and above all a bit too random to be really fun.

It's not exactly a bad movie, but a rom-com that can never include a successful joke in the story. Furthermore, the film is full of predictable paths and side characters that are just bland. It is that the film chooses a very nice location, otherwise there would be nothing to do with this safe comedy. Not really memorable this. Scott never made it back to his former level.
