“You have no right to fuck with my head!”

The Stanford Prison Experiment is an interesting, but also somewhat flat film. The premise is intriguing, and at certain moments (especially towards the end) the film manages to impress. This is mainly due to the strong acting by Miller, Sheridan, Crudup and certainly Angarano, among others. But The Stanford Prison Experiment does have some issues (particularly with the pacing), and it takes a long time for the film to really take off. Not all characters are equally interesting, and the ending also feels a bit anticlimactic. Realistic and truthful, but that doesn't mean it does the movie well.

This third film adaptation of the story of several students who participate in a psychological experiment at Stanford University in which they take on the role of guard or prisoner for two weeks for a fee, is more interested in the psychological aspects of the story than in building tension. That probably makes the film more realistic than the previous film adaptations and it certainly provides interesting insights, also in the comments that the participants give during the end credits. A side effect of this approach is that as a viewer you are less involved in what the 'prisoners' have to undergo, so that the film as a whole is dramatically on the flat side.

Especially in the first part of the film, not much happens and I found it rather boring. That comes later, when the excesses are shown. Halfway through the film there is a scene in which a co-worker of Dr. Zimbardo happens to ask about the independent variable in the study. Zimbardo reacts irritated and does not answer. But the question is crucial and this fact could have been worked out better in my opinion. Especially because much later it turned out that this whole experiment was quite manipulated by Dr. Zimbardo. Anyway, it all gives food for thought and there is also nice acting, that's why 3 stars.
