"Real life is stranger than fiction"
The Vladivostok of 1985 is clearly too drab and gray for the young Vasili, who gets unreasonably excited about films with Jean-Claude van Damme. His mother, not happy either, sees only one way out: sign up as a mail-order bride. The dream seems to come true if they can go to Seattle to live with John, but he turns out to be a reactionary bastard. So there must be a second escape.
