"The heart of a woman, the soul of an artist"

Biopic about the world's first successful female conductor: Antonia Brico. Antonia Brico was born Wilhemina Wolthius in Rotterdam in 1902, but moved to California in 1908 with her adoptive parents. After a musical education in the US, she left in 1927 for the Berlin Conservatory, where she became the first American to graduate in 1929. In 1930 she made her debut as the first female conductor for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra; in 1938 she is the first woman to stand for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Her eventful life is also successfully dominated by conquering and preserving a place in the male-dominated world of conductors.

If the ridiculous depiction of New York in the 1920s isn't enough reason to ignore this film, just wait until you hear the terribly banal dialogue in this disastrous biography that is enough material for an entire season of a (daily) soap opera. crams into just over 2 hours. Problems really disappear like snow in the sun or are solved in an editing session. A sad example is when main character Antonia Brico [Christianne de Bruijn] tries to persuade a conductor who is a misogynist and hates Americans (Antonia grew up in the US) to prepare her for her audition at the prestigious Berlin Conservatory A big mouth, a musical montage and less than a minute later she is accepted! We don't even get to see the audition itself! What we do get to see is a collection of scenes that were not good enough for a very mediocre soap opera Turner Schofield and Raymond Thiry are the only ones who still make some impression in this dragon, but that means very little. Regularly cringe-inducingly bad, in any case an insult to Antonia Braco, clearly a woman whose life story deserved a much better film adaptation.

Great film, a real gem that, in my humble opinion, doesn't get enough attention. Christanne de Bruijn really delivers a world-class role as Antonia Brico (Willy), and the rest of the cast is also doing exceptionally well. The film moved me and pleasantly surprised me, a big 8, so 4.0 *

“You want to like De Dirigent” (NRC October 23, 2018).

As far as I'm concerned, that has nothing to do with “like”. This is simply a beautiful biography about a Dutch woman, of whom - I may have to admit to my shame - I had never heard of until I saw this film. It is a compelling story about an assertive and ambitious woman who fights against the tide for her place in a typically male world in the first half of the last century.

I realize that biopics are often exaggerated for dramatic effects. Even if that is the case with this film, I still take my hat off to director Maria Peters. In my opinion it is the best Dutch film in years. I thoroughly enjoyed this, not least because of the phenomenal title role of Christanne de Bruijn. Movies like this remind me why I've loved movies for decades.
