Born on the Fourth of July plot

"A story of innocence lost and courage found."

Ron Kovic was born on July 4, 1946, the United States National Day. He grew up in a patriotic family. At school he excels in sports and at the age of 18 he voluntarily enlists in the Marine Corps, knowing that he will be sent immediately to Vietnam as a trained fighter. His childhood friend Donna goes to university and takes an active part in the anti-war protest. In Vietnam, Kovic is badly injured by a bullet in the spine and the doctors tell him that he will never be able to walk again. Ron does not accept the judgment and compulsively exercises his lower extremities. But slowly Kovic begins to question the meaning of the Vietnam War and becomes involved in the veterans' movement that wants to force the withdrawal of American soldiers in Vietnam.

Born on the Fourth of July is such a long-running film that never really gets boring. The bit of war manages to mix wonderfully with the necessary drama. It comes together very well here. Tom Cruise plays one of his best roles here.

Incredibly low rating for what may be the best anti-war film ever made. This movie belongs in the top 250 of all time and actually in my top 10. Tom Cruise in the role of his life. Oliver Stone's masterpiece. Everything is right in this movie. Beautiful music too. An absolute must for any movie buff. 5 stars

Nice film that appealed to us. The war in Vietnam has actually never been understood by the West, nor by us and many other Dutch people.

The bombardment of the port city of Hải Phòng (Tonkin) on 23 November 1946 by French warships was the beginning of the misery. What was then Vietnam was part of the Union of Indochina, a colony of France. France was unable to keep the colony and left as their great support America moved into the country. So that was a miscalculation, everything that was wrong and that could go wrong, also happened in reality. Just an example: the Americans conquered a piece of ground but ran over the Viet Cong fighters who were underground and then attacked them from the front and behind the following night.

Then the film, a fanatical boy with equally fanatical friends enlists in the marines and thinks he will end the war in a short time. They shoot at everything that affects Vietnamese and many civilians are killed. Also babies and small children with their mothers.

Back in the United States, they slowly come to realize that they have been lied to and that the war brought nothing but sorrow on many sides. So the story was to stop communism, but you can see the way in which that went in this film, among others.

Ron Kovic gained a different understanding from the fight to get things done and so went on a demonstration with his former friends who had also served in Vietnam.

Personally we have a lot of respect for these people, wanting to change their opinion when they see the other side, like Ron!

A 7.5.
