Bertie and Elizabeth plot

When King George V dies, he is succeeded by his eldest son Edward. Edward is determined to marry an American divorcee, which is not tolerated by the British government. Only when Edward abdicates is he free to marry whomever he pleases. That would mean, however, that George's youngest son, also called George, but nicknamed "Bertie", would come to the throne. However, this George is not a great speaker, who suffers from stuttering a lot.
