What an incredibly sweet and nice movie. The animation looks a bit simple and cheap but is striking. This movie shows normal life and the animation does that too. A simple down jacket looks a bit nicer than in real life, that remains the magic of animation. And that's what the movie is good at, those kinds of images. Furthermore, the movie is about normal people who have a somewhat abnormal Christmas Eve and Christmas Day but what happens either remains normal or makes you laugh (in that car with an accident for example). And normal people provide a bit more recognition. Apart from the ending with that quest the movie remains reasonably down to earth. Pleasant. Nice characters, excellent voice acting and above all a movie that gave me a warm feeling because of the ordinary. Sometimes a bit cloying but around Christmas I really like that. Rounded up 4.0*.

Not on the level of the Netflix sensation Klaus (Film, 2019), but actually a decent Christmas animation that is OK to catch during these Christmas days. Nice setting with that cozy atmosphere in a small British village where everyone knows everyone.

The Christmas period revolves around the theme of loneliness and that is strongly brought forward here. You have the boy who often sits alone while his single mother is at work. His father who lives elsewhere cannot keep his promise either. And you have the very grumpy embittered teacher where you quickly feel what is really bothering her.

Humor is certainly not absent and it is certainly easy to watch. Those strange parents in their van, well, how funny, but also very stupid and then you have to watch out for the combination.

The one Christmas that puts everything into perspective. I love how 'That Christmas' (2024) plays with the negative aspects of Christmas (loneliness, boredom, predictability, etc.) to show how special it is that people still come together every year. And yet Santa Claus (Brian Cox) regretfully has to admit that he can't influence everything when the people of Wellington-on-Sea become estranged from each other. In the end, they have to do it themselves! 'That Christmas' (2024) is clearly made for a younger audience, so expect a somewhat calm narrative in which the tensions don't rise too high and the personal problems never seem insoluble. But as a grown-up cynic, I want to immerse myself in a warm Christmas glow. The harbor town of Wellington-on-Sea is wonderfully vividly designed with weather and water effects and subtle touches such as the young fox.
