“I'm ten years old. My life is half over and I don't even know if I'm black with white stripes or white with black stripes!”

Nice animation film. The beginning at the zoo is the most fun, and Rock, Stiller and Schwimmer, among others, are strong as voice actors. The humor works, and the way a lion, zebra, hippo and giraffe work together makes for many funny situations. When the four end up on an island it gets a bit less, and it all starts to look a lot like one big farce. With a good dose of sentiment, of course. Fortunately, the ending is strong. Compliments also to the penguins, a bit like the MVPs of this film.

A real children's animation, although they will not be able to follow the film references of course. They hope to please the parents who are watching. But then it's pretty thin. The animation is quite busy and not that well animated. It mainly relies on the humor with some well-known voices. It works, otherwise there wouldn't be a whole franchise built on it. But it's definitely not quality here.

Zebra Marty [Chris Rock] is celebrating his tenth birthday at The New York Zoo. When he discovers that a group of penguins are preparing an escape, Marty himself begins to crave the world outside this zoo. After a failed escape attempt, the zoo decides (for whatever reason) to bring the animals involved to Africa. When the penguins take control of the freighter and set course for the South Pole, some of the cargo falls overboard. Together with lion Alex [Ben Stiller], giraffe Melman [David Schwimmer] and hippopotamus Gloria [Jada Pinkett Smith], Marty ends up in Madagascar where they befriend Julien [Sacha Baron Cohen], the king of the lemurs. There is not much more story and that is why Carnell and McGrath do everything they can to make the audience laugh. But the Looney Tunes-esque humor is forced and starts to tire quickly. Fortunately, the penguins' military discipline led by “Smile & Wave” Skipper [Tom McGrath] produces some excellent moments.
