Long ago, an emperor lived in China. This emperor lived in the most beautiful and largest castle in the world. In the garden lived a nightingale that sang so beautifully that everyone who heard it stopped to listen. When the emperor heard about that bird, he ordered his maid to have him perform in the palace. And the nightingale sang! The emperor brought tears to his eyes. The nightingale stayed at court. Until one day a large package was delivered to the emperor. It looked exactly like the real nightingale, but completely decorated with diamonds, rubies and sapphires. Could this fake nightingale be able to sing? And which bird sings the best? The Chinese Nightingale is Andersen's fairy tale about greed and loyalty, about real and counterfeit, about friendship and recognition.
