Disappointment. There are actually not many differences with the many other Batman animated films, but this Mask of the Phantasm is disappointing thanks to the development of the story. Full of flashbacks about how Bruce Wayne became Batman and how he met his love. However, this was a disturbing factor because the subject varied a little too much. The relatively early announcement of the 'Phantasm' character is also a shame (although the person in question was different from what I expected), which makes this film lose some of its power. What remains is a fairly standard film (unfortunately).

Broke.

Apparently this film is very well rated, based on the reports it seems to be because this film is fairly faithful to the original origin story. As a non-Batman fan, that doesn't matter to me, I just want to see a nice animated film.

In any case, you don't have to set it up for the animation. Cheap TV animation, only during a few action scenes it looks a bit smoother, but even then it's nothing. It's because the style doesn't suit me at all. Background textures try to fill the emptiness of the frames, but that never really works.

The story is quite clumsy, the characters are not interesting and the voice work is also not very good. It may be a short film, but if it doesn't catch on for a minute, even 76 minutes is still an hour and fifteen minutes too long. No, this isn't for me at all.

0.5*

The first in a series of animated films about Batman is the best, although this is certainly not due to the disappointing, primitive animation in which none of the style of the live-action films can be found. But there is a good story and the screenplay has a sharp sense of humor that is missing from the later animated films. The voice performances are also good and Mark Hamill proves to be downright sublime as The Joker, a role he would repeat a number of times.
