Asterix Contra Caesar has always been my favorite Asterix movie. The story is nice like how Obelix is in love with Valhalla and I really liked the whole adventure. 4.0.

This is probably the Asterix movie I've seen the least, if I don't count those of the Vikings and America. I remember seeing this cartoon in the cinema at the time entitled "Asterix and Caesar's surprise". Later this title became "Asterix Contra Caesar" on VHS and DVD. The cartoon is based on 2 albums: "Asterix and the 1st Legion" and "Asterix and the Gladiators". These are fine albums in themselves and the combination also works wonderfully. But I still miss the charm of the previous cartoons here. Especially the intro song by the Belgian/Walloon singer "Plastic Bertrand" who caused a furore at the time with his played back "Ca plane pour moi" did not fit the film at all. That being said, the story is entertaining, but I do miss the humor I'm used to from other Asterix cartoons.

After the great Asterix and the Heroes this movie was the fourth one I saw yesterday during the Asterix-Marathon organized by a friend.

With this we had reached the absolute low point. The same criticism as on Asterix and the Banging Cauldron applies. Two comic albums, namely The 1st Legion and The Gladiators are taken as a basis, with the result that a story has to be unraveled, leaving no time for the entertaining nonsense that are in the best Asterix movies. And here too, the music is sometimes heavily dramatic, while an Asterix film is light-hearted at best. Disastrous for the atmosphere.

Finally, here too the lack of other voice actors (Dutch dub). On the one hand, Obelix is filled in by the same voice actor as in the older films, but the Asterix here is truly disastrous, and sounds like the stereotype of a low-level construction worker. The moment he said "You don't give a girl a menhir, do you?" continues with "You have to give her flowers!" I rather expected the sequel "You have to fuck her!" would be. With Asterix and the Banging Cauldron it was much less of an objection, but here it causes great annoyance.

Clearly the weakest Asterix cartoon, with the caveat that we didn't include the latest cartoons in our marathon because (a) they weren't in the box I borrowed from my brother-in-law and (b) the latest films were narrated by under other Jim Bakkum what we wanted to save ourselves. Of course we could have watched the French dubs too, but man doesn't always make sense. Asterix versus Caesar gets at least 1*.
