Billy (Trenton Knight) is ten and lives with his mother (Ally Sheedy) in a run-down neighborhood of Los Angeles. At school, he is looked down on and he has few friends. However, his heroic, hardworking mother who is also a widow confesses that she does not love him. One day, the owner of a toy store gives Billy a tin soldier, who undergoes an instant transformation. He helps Billy against the gangs that attack him and ensures that he finds a suitable girlfriend.
