The Mosquito Coast plot

"He went too far."

Eccentric inventor Allie Fox finds himself increasingly uncomfortable in contemporary American society, which he finds selfish and materialistic. He moves with his wife and children Charlie, Jerry, April and Clover to the rainforest of the Central American Mosquito Coast. There he wants to build a new society with new values and a great respect for the freedom of the individual. His own family must be the basis of that. The family members reluctantly travel along, but gradually find that their husband and father's plan has become a veritable obsession and he himself a tyrant who expects absolute obedience rather than complete freedom.

Nice film that starts to feel more and more unpleasant as the viewing progresses.
Ford convincingly plays the role of a -possessed inventor with totalitarian streaks who gradually loses his grip on reality, which ultimately leads to his own demise and almost the demise of his family. Not pleasant to watch, but competent executed. 3*

Regression in the jungle

Not so great. That the family (especially the mother) does not rebel against the father, who continuously exposes them to hardship and danger, is beyond me. Only a madman would do this to his family. The semi-philosophical quip about the man who loses his bond with civilization was even more enjoyable. A few twists and turns were also a source of annoyance: those rebels, Ford's exaggerated stubbornness, who always thinks he's right. On the positive side, the film gradually turns itself against the main character. Overall, I don't think the film is very believable.

Peter Weir. The man makes interesting films; sometimes a bit slow (and that is certainly the case here), but still, intriguing, and this won't be my last from Weir. The Mosquito Coast is a film about obsession. Harrison Ford plays Allie, an inventor with a rather self-centered nature and an obsessive urge for independence. Dissatisfied with his life in the US, he and his family take the step to build a new life in the jungles of Central America. But that doesn't make it all that much better; Allie's stubbornness slowly escalates and his and his family's lives slide further and further into misery. Up to murder (or at least manslaughter) and the burning down of a church.

It's not a happy movie; the jungle is an oppressive place here, especially when the man of the house slowly but surely loses himself more and more in a morbid aversion to civilization, and in doing so also drags his family into misery. An atypical role for Ford too, certainly in the midst of his Indiana Jones and Han Solo fame, but he certainly convinces as an obsessive father. Beautiful locations also in Belize, Honduras or wherever it may be.
