During the Vietnam War, the US military uses a small village as a shelter to keep an eye on the Ho Chi Minh trail. In revenge for their support of the Americans, the North Vietnamese army kills the villagers' sacred elephant that they use in ceremonies. Captain Sam Cahill, who is about to return home, and Captain TC Doyle, who will replace him as the village liaison, assemble a team to transport a new elephant to the village. However, they have to operate under time pressure, personal conflicts, transport problems and against the opposition of the North Vietnamese army.
